Five Guys Named Moe is a band formed in Waba, Ontario, which is a small town 45 minutes northwest of Ottawa. Their music is characterised by its diversity, drawing on pop, jazz and country influences. They showcased brilliant harmonies as a feature of their performances. The group consisted of Jonathan Evans on guitar and vocals, Meg Lunney on piano and vocals, Tom McKay on bass guitar and vocals, and the one native Scotlander, Graeme Murray on drums and vocals. If you’re counting, Five Guys Named Moe had four bandmates. Jonathan, Tom and Meg were students at the University of Ottawa.

Meg Lunney
Glasgow Live interviewed the bandmates after they moved in the spring of 1990 from Canada to the UK. After spending a month in London, they left England and moved to Glasgow where they found Graeme. They played their first gig in Glasgow in May 1990. Jonathan Evans told Glasgow Live, “Me and Tom were in a band together – the original formation of the band. And that broke up. So we got Meg in to the band and started the new Five Guys Named Moe. It was a frustration at the lack of progress we were making in Canada that prompted (our) move to Britain.”
Tom McKay told Glasgow Live, “All our influences were British, so we felt that we might get accepted better if we came here. Jonathan Evans added, “It was stepping into something unknown, for sure, and I don’t think we had a very strong financial position at all, so in that sense it was a risk. coming to Britain. ‘But I don’t think we were thinking of that, we were just thinking of getting here and starting to play music.
“We were really surprised,” said Jonathan. “In Canada, most of the bands that are doing well in the city of Ottawa are doing cover cover versions. The type of of music that goes down well is things like Bryan Adams and Glass Tiger work well, and in Glasgow our music is getting a better response than we expected.”
Tom said: “I think that here pop music is much more important to the average person. People want to go out and see bands doing original songs, opposed to hands doing cover versions. In Canada, it is the exact opposite.”

“She’s On A Mountain” was written by Jonathan Evans. The music video has bandmates lying on the floor of a room looking up. Meg is moving her hands around in different positions around her face. The chorus tells us “she’s on a mountain top, and she’s looking down.” There is a sense that she wants to expand her horizons. The narrator advises it’s time to take off your clothes and unwind with the buffalo. In the video bandmates hold signs that read “sheep,” “horse,” “cow,” and “buffalo.” They stand by the edge of a lake, or on the side of a highway, and the camera pans to the mountains in view.
“She’s On A Mountain” peaked at #14 in Burnaby and #27 in Vancouver (BC).
Later in 1990, a track from their Five Guys Named Moe album titled “Breathing” got some airplay in Burnaby. Another single, “Selfish Days” was also released and received airplay in Toronto and a few other radio markets in Canada.
Jonathan is still active in the music business. He wrote a Christmas song for the British TV show Guess with Jess. The TV show ran from November 2009 to March 2010. For some years Jonathan Evans has found work with Galaxy Brain. On their website it states “Jonathan Evans writes music for cartoons in Ottawa where he lives with his wife, daughter, and dogdog.” In 2025, he was in the studio with Rosemary Fairweather to record the song “I Don’t Want To Be Friends”. The song was featured in the Netflix series Emily In Paris. Also, in 2025, Evans posted on his Facebook account that he was “nominated for a CASMA award for best original song for the HBO series Mermicorno Starfall.” Mermicorno Starfall is a fantasy-comedy show about mermaid-unicorns who rescue their sister from a squid villain. CASMA is the Canadian Screen Music Awards. Evans was one of five nominees in the Best Original Song category.
Tom McKay has continued to be active in the music business. He recently co-wrote and produced the single “Ain’t No Substitute” by Maureen Honore. The single topped the LMR (London Music Radio) Soul Chart in London, UK, on December 8, 2025. McKay also wrote a song that reached number-one on the UK Soul Chart in 2020.
